Fulgurite Glass – Lightning Stone
What is Fulgurite glass?
Also known as “fossilized lightning”, Fulgurites are natural tubes or crusts of glass formed when a lightning strike hits the ground.
Our Fulgurites are from the sandy desert regions of North Africa.
How are Fulgurite Glass Formed?
When the heat energy of a lightening bolt strikes sandy ground, it fuses sandy material silica (quartz) sand or rock into a tube linke shape Lightening bolts reach temperatures of over 2000 degrees Celsius which instantly melts sand particles to form the body of teh Fulgurite. Teh shape of the fulgurite mimics the path of the lightning bolt as it disperses into the ground.
Fulgurites are found around the world but are relatively rare.
How do you identify Fulgurite?
Fulgurites are typically hollow glassy tubes with a rough sand particle covered exterior and either a rough or smooth surface inside the tube.
The size and length of a fulgurite depends on the strength of the lightning strike and the thickness of the sand bed.
