Petrified Wood – Un-Polished
Petrified wood, from Ancient Greek πέτρα meaning ‘rock’ or ‘stone’; literally ‘wood turned into stone’, is the name given to the fossilized remains of wood. Petrified wood forms when the lack of oxygen slows decay of the wood, allowing minerals to replace cell walls and to fill void spaces in the wood. Often, the tree tissues have been replaced by mostly silica in the form of opal, chalcedony or quartz, creating a beautiful near perfect three-dimensional representation of the original organic material.
These fascinating, colourful specimens make Fantastic showpieces.
