Both adored and feted in ancient, modern and more recent times, Jet has been in popular use a semi-precious gemstone for millennia.
Jet is produced by compression and fossilization process of wood from the ‘Araucariaceae’ tree family- an extinct species similar to todays Monkey Puzzle tree.
Found above the Shale line in the Cliffs of the North Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby, which has become famous for it high quality Jet.
